July 7, 2011 (San Diego’s East County)--We go to the mall to watch a movie, to shop for new attire, or maybe just to walk around and spend some quality time window shopping. However, there are plenty of other things to do besides shop, if you go on the right day.

Every month there are special events going on at malls in East County—such as free concerts, pet adoptions, children’s activities and family fun. Here are some highlights of events taking place in July that are worth checking out.

Grossmont Center in La Mesa is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year with an appropriate 1960’s Flower Power theme. The center’s annual summer time concerts provide a lively atmosphere every Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. through the end of this month. The featured bands will be playing anything from Jazz, Blues, to Classic Rock and Country. On July 22nd the Macy’s courtyard will be home to Rubber Souls, a Beatles tribute band, who will without a doubt encompass the theme of this year’s anniversary celebration.

Animal lovers will be happy to hear that this weekend, July 8-10 from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. the San Diego Humane Society in partnership with Grossmont Center will be taking part in Pet Adoption Weekend. Come by and see the puppies, dogs, kittens, and cats that are up for adoption. If you take one home you’ll also receive a $50 Grossmont Center gift card. The event will be taking place across from the food court, next to Zales Jewelers.

In the Alpine area, the Viejas Outlet Center is a great escape. There are fun activities for children and adults alike to enjoy. Viejas recently opened an 18-hole Mini Golf course that’s sure to bring fun times. Prices are $6 for children, military, and seniors and $8 for adults. The course is open Monday – Friday from 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., Saturdays 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Viejas’ Interactive Fountain also provides hours of fun and entertainment for children and it’s a great way to cool down while still playing under the sun. The mall also has a bowling alley and an arcade with games galore.

If you’re looking to beat the summer heat and enjoy your time indoors, then you might want to stop by Parkway Plaza in El Cajon this Saturday and bring your little ones with you. The Disney Store will be holding a Storytime event with Winnie the Pooh and Friends. Children will be able to listen to a story accompanied by Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, and other Hundred Acre Wood characters. They will be having three different sessions on Saturday, July 9th. The sessions will take place at 10:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 1:30 a.m. After checking with the Disney Store, it’s advised people line up no more than 15 minutes prior to the event. It’s also worth noting that the reading area will also be limited to 30 people per session.

Regal Cinemas in Parkway Plaza is also holding a special $1 movie deal every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. The deal ends August 17 and features different G & PG-rated movie selections every week. It’s a great opportunity to take your whole family to the theatres without breaking your wallet. For a complete listing of movie selections available each week visit: http://www.westfield.com/parkway/pdf/regalMovieXpress0611.pdf. As a reminder, all other movies are only $6 before noon every day.
