LA MESA SIGNS COMMEMORATE 2013 FREEWAY SHOOTING VICTIM XUSHA BROWN: $100,000 REWARD OFFERED

June 21, 2016 (La Mesa) – Freeway memorial signs commemorating murder victim and Sycuan tribal member Xusha Brown Jr. were unveiled today at the La Mesa Police Department.  Brown was shot and killed while in a vehicle on Interstate 8 in La Mesa in the early morning on May 5, 2013.  The driver of the Nissan Maxima, Malcolm Hune, was also injured.

June 12, 2016 (San Diego's East County) - The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has released a Roll Call video to all law enforcement nationwide about the dangers of improperly handling fentanyl and its deadly consequences.  Acting Deputy Administrator Jack Riley and two local police detectives from New Jersey appear on the video to urge any law enforcement personnel who come in contact with fentanyl or fentanyl compounds to take the drugs directly to a lab.

MAN CHARGED WITH ARSON AND ATTEMPTED MURDER IN LA MESA

June 2, 2016 (La Mesa) – The District Attorney’s office has added attempted murder to the list of charges facing Theodis Barley, 50, who was arrested May 12 on arson by La Mesa Police.. He is accused of setting fire to his sister’s home on Nebo Drive in La Mesa on May 9th; authorities believe he knew that his sister was inside at the time.

Authorities seek public help to locate his killer, an unidentified Hispanic man

May 30, 2016 (Spring Valley) – Jeffrey Quirino, 17, died this morning at a hospital of stabbing injuries suffered May 23rd in Spring Valley.  Family and friends held a candlelight vigil in his memory last night in Spring Valley.

May 29,2016 (San Diego's East County) -- AB 2590, the Restorative Justice bill authored by  Assemblymember Shirley Weber (D-San Diego)  passed the full Assembly last week

With a massive recidivism rate, it's time for more effective approach to public safety, Dr.    Weber believes. This bill provides an opportunity for the offender - with the consent of the victims or their families - to accept responsibility, acknowledge the harm to victims, make agreements to repair damage as much as possible, and clarify future intentions to reform.

TEEN STABBED MONDAY IN SPRING VALLEY NOT EXPECTED TO SURVIVE

May 26, 2016 (Spring Valley) – Detectives from the San Diego Sheriff’s homicide detail and the East County Gang Task Force are investigating the stabbing of 17-year-old Jeffrey Quirino. The teen is still being treated at a hospital, but his injuries are so severe that he is not expected to survive, says Lieutenant Kenneth Nelson.

EL CAJON POLICE CHARGE FORMER UBER DRIVER WITH 5 MORE SEXUAL ASSAULTS, INCLUDING RAPE OF A 13-YR. OLD

May 25, 2016 (El Cajon) – An Uber driver arrested for sexual assault in El Cajon in March now faces charges as a serial rapist. 

El Cajon Police have charged John David Sanchez, 52, with sexually assaulting five additional victims, including raping a 13-year-old child and raping an unconscious person.  Authorities believe those attacks occurred between 2011 and 2014 at Sanchez’s residence in San Diego.

May 21, 2016 (San Diego) – This week, Congressman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and 12 other members of Congress introduced legislation to rein in civil forfeiture abuse, signing on as an original cosponsor of the Due Process Act of 2016. The bill makes several important changes to the nation's federal civil forfeiture program to help curb recent abuses and prevent Americans from having their property taken away by law enforcement without due process.  A copy of the bill’s text can be found here.

May 19, 2016 (San Diego) -- Signature gathers are working to put two competing measures on the ballot. One, backed by former M*A*S*H star Mike Farrell, would eliminate the death penalty in California.  The second measure would speed up the process for inmates on death row.

May 14, 2016 (El Cajon) – The driver of a red Mazda truck is dead after fleeing from police and crashing into a tree shortly after midnight in El Cajon.  Officers attempting to render aid to the driver made a grisly discovery – a dead female in the backseat. Arriving paramedics reported that they believe the female was deceased before the collision and that her death was suspicious, said Lieutenant Rob Rainsweiler.

POLICE SEEK MEN IN GREEN FORD EXPLORER SUSPECTED IN HOME INVASION MURDER AT SAN CARLOS HOME

May 13, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) – Brent Adler, 33, is dead of a gunshot wound after arriving at his San Carlos home and interrupting a home invasion robbery.  San Diego Police are seeking four or five men spotting fleeing the scene in the 8500 block of Tommy Drive in a green Ford Expedition Wednesday, May 11 around 2:50 p.m..

The victim suffered at least one gunshot wound to his upper body and was found dead in front of the residence.

ELDER ABUSE SUSPECT ARRESTED

May 10, 2016 (La Mesa) -- Aaron Spaulding, a 31-year-old La Mesa man has been arrested and charged with elder abuse of his 78-year-old neighbor. The incident prompted a stand-off with Sheriff’s deputies at the family’s home on Alta Mira Drive near Mount Helix for several hours Monday night.

May 5, 2016 (La Mesa) — La Mesa Police tried to stop a vehicle for an equipment violation in the Costco Parking lot this morning, but the suspect put his Toyota Camry into reverse quickly, causing officers to have to jump out of the way, according to an police. He fled, leading officers on a brief pursuit before he got out of the vehicle and ran behind businesses along Fletcher Parkway.

UKRANIAN NATIONAL SENTENCED TO 17 YEARS PRISON FOR SEX TRAFFICKING TWO ADULT WOMEN

May 5, 2016 (San Diego) -- Sergeyi Bazar, a 37-year-old Ukrainian national living in San Diego, was sentenced in federal court May 3rd to 17 years in custody for sex trafficking two adult women in late 2014. Bazar was found guilty after jury trial in November 2015 for two counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion and one count of coercion and enticement.

WARNER SPRINGS SCHOOLS CLOSED DUE TO VANDALISM

May 3, 2016 (Warner Springs) – Extensive vandalism forced closure today of the entire Warner Unified School District complex, which includes elementary through high school classrooms as well as district offices.  The district's website states it hopes to reopen soon and will notify parents when children can return to school.

A maintenance worker arriving at work Wednesday morning discovered the damage, which included graffiti, broken windows, classrooms ransacked, furniture overturned and fire extinguishers discharged.  The worker called  Sheriff’s deputies at 5:15 a.m.
