PREVENT YOUR VEHICLE FROM CAUSING WILDFIRES

East County News Service

August 16, 2015 (San Diego’s East County) ---Many wildfires are caused by vehicles – including a dozen spot fires in Ramona last Friday caused by a loose towing chain on a motor home that ignited dry brush. Poorly maintained brakes, tires, or other vehicle components can also spark fires, as can vehicles coming into contact with dry grasses.

Here are some tips for preventing your vehicle from accidentally starting a fire:

August 13, 2015 (Ramona)--Last week, East County Magazine reported on the United States Forest Service’s announcement that it will not allow its new air tanker firefighting planes to land at the Ramona Air Base. The USFS says the runway is not long enough. However Cal Fire provided a video showing a Cal Fire pilot landing the same type of plane in Ramona.

Now, all  five of San Diego’s Congressional representatives (Duncan Hunter, Darrell Issa, Scott Peters, Juan Vargas and Susan Davis) have signed a letter sent to Chief Thomas Tidwell of the USFS asking him to take action.

CAL FIRE CANCELS DAYS OFF FOR FIREFIGHTERS, HAS ALL 18 STATIONS FULLY STAFFED COUNTYWIDE AS FIRES RAGE ACROSS STATE

East County News Service

August 9, 2015 (San Diego's East County)--More than 10,000 firefighters are battling over 17 active wildfires statewide. The largest of these, the Rocky Fire, has consumed nearly 70,000 acres in Lake, Colusa and Yolo Counties. Thunder and lightning continue to spark new fires, while gusty and erratic winds could also create extreme fire growth potential, says Fire Captain Kendal Bortisser, public information officer at CAL FIRE.

While CAL FIRE San Diego continues to support the Northern California wildfires with fire engines, bulldozers, hand crews, and support personnel, Captain Bortisser says, “We are committed to ensuring that firefighting resources are in place here in San Diego County as a top priority.” Days off have been cancelled for all CAL FIRE firefighters and off duty firefighters have been recalled back to work. Additionally, all 18 CAL FIRE stations throughout San Diego County are staffed, he adds.

CAL FIRE is asking all residents to be careful outdoors. Even simple household chores like cutting dead down dry grass can spark a wildfire if not done the right way with the right tool. To learn more go to www.ReadyForWildfire.org.

Below are updates from CAL FIRE on the wildfires burning statewide as of Friday night:

PROGRESS MADE ON CUTCA FIRE AT PALOMAR

Update July 26, 2015, 8 p.m. -- The CutCa fire is now 50% contained, Cleveland National Forest's Inciweb site reports. Crews are spiked out on the line for this evening and will resume work in the morning. Heat remains in the interior of the fire perimeter. Infrared mapping will occur this evening. Crews will continue mop-up operations tomorrow and cooler temps expected will help their efforts. Firefighters will maintain a community presence and provide structure protection if needed. The south/southeast portion of the Cutca fire is an area of concern with several hotspots and potential for ignited fuel rolling across the fireline. Crews are working to suppress this high priority section of fire.

In the fire area there is no previously recorded fire history. Fuels remain critically dry due to drought conditions and can be difficult to suppress, so firefighters are being highly vigilant in mopping up and patrolling for hot spots.

BILLS WOULD LET FIREFIGHTERS HALT DRONES

By Miriam Raftery

Photo, San Bernardino Fire Dept.: North Fire in its early stage

July 20, 2015 (Sacramento) -- After a series of  serious incidents involving drones interfering with firefighting aircraft,  state legislators have introduced bills that would allow firefighters and rescue personnel to damage or disable drones, also increasing penalties for drone operators who impede firefighting.

The latest and most devastating incident occurred Friday, when five drones forced firefighting planes to delay air drops in order to avoid mid-air collisions. The North Fire quickly spread out of control, crossing Interstate 15 in San Bernadino County and destroyed 20 vehicles on the freeway.  The blaze swelled to thousands of acres, also destroying homes and other property.
