August 31, 2019 (Santee) - We missed the start of the season last week, but this week, ECM Friday Night Lights is back and we’ve got a good one to kick things off.  It’s Valhalla and West HIlls from the Land of Blue Turf in Santee. The Norsemen are coming off a big win against University City last week, while the Wolf Pack are also 1-0 after beating Southwest El Centro.

August 30, 2019 (San Diego) - The Aztec men’s soccer team fell 3-2 to San Diego in their season opener. Playing in front of 1,687 raucous fans, the Aztecs held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but saw Torero forward Miguel Berry score two second half goals in a five-minute span to secure the win for USD.

August 30, 2019 (Fort Myers, Fla.) - The San Diego State volleyball team opened its 2019 campaign in convincing fashion Friday, posting a pair of 3-0 sweeps over Akron (25-20, 25-19, 25-18) and Bryant (25-22, 25-16, 25-13) on the first day of the FGCU Homewood Suites Fort Myers Classic inside Alico Arena. With the victories, the Aztecs registered their first 2-0 start to a season since 2013.

Helix product DeShawn Keirsey went 0 for 2 with three walks, one RBI and two runs scored for the Cedar Rapids Kernels as they defeated the Quad City River Bandits 6-2.

Vahalla product alum Greg Garcia went 2 for 4 with two singles and scored two runs for the San Diego Padres as they defeated the Cincinnati Reds 3-2.

August 22, 2019 (San Diego) - Kiera Utush, a freshman from Rocklin, Calif., scored on a penalty kick five minutes into the second half to put the San Diego State women’s soccer team on the scoreboard, but it wasn’t enough to defeat the No. 22 Texas Tech Red Raiders on Thursday night.  SDSU (0-1-0) came out on the short end of a 6-1 decision in both team’s season opener.

Grossmont Foothillers product Ben Brault started for the Pittsburgh Pirates as he pitched 4.2 innings, gave up five hits, four runs (four earned), three walks and struck out three as the Pirates were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals 11-9.  Brault didn't get the decision. 
 
Helix High School and UCLA Bruins product Jack Stronach went 2 for 3 with one single and one double for the Tri City Dust Devils as they defeated the Salem Keizer Volcanos 5-2.

West Hills and SDSU product Stephen Strasburg started today for the Washington Nationals as his record improves to 14-4.  Strasbutg pitched seven innings, gave up two hits, one run (one earned) and struck out nine for the Washington Nationals as they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-4. 
 
Valhalla and USD product Jeff Houghtby went 1 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and one RBI for the Salem Keizer Volcanos as they defeated the Eugene Emeralds 8-1.

August 1, 2019 (Long Island) - This past Saturday, ASC San Diego’s incredible National Premiere Soccer League playoff run came to an end after succumbing to a tough 0-2 loss against #1 seed the New York Cosmos. In a match that could be summed up as “David vs Goliath," Goliath prevailed after two second half goals from David Diosa and Junior Burgos saw the Cosmos through to the Championship Final.

July 29, 2019 (Des Moines) - Six former Aztecs competed at the US Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa over the weekend.

Whitney Ashley (’12) had the highest finish among former SDSU student-athletes with a fourth-place finish in the discus throw. Her best toss was 201-10 (61.52m).

Granite Hills product Travis Taijeron went 1 for 4 with a two-run homer, his 22nd of the season for the Syracuse Mets, as they were defeated by the Indianapolis Indians by a 7-6 score. 
 
El Capitan product Kevin Ginkel appeared in relief for the Reno Aces as he pitched one inning, gave up one hit and one walk and struck out three as the Aces defeated the Tacoma Rainiers 10-7.

July 22, 2019 (Mesa, Ariz.) - This past Saturday, ASC San Diego hoisted the 2019 National Premier Soccer League Championship trophy for the first time in club history after a stunning 2-1 victory over Southwest conference rivals FC Arizona. In an all odds against them match, ASC San Diego battled the frustrations of travel, climate, and injuries to overcome an FC Arizona side who boasted a near perfect (nine wins, two draws, no losses) home record this season. After making the 5-hour road trip east to Mesa, ASC were greeted by a scorching 108°F kickoff temperature and a fiery home crowd contingent to match.
