September 27, 2012 (San Diego)--After a rather lackluster first half, the No. 17/25 San Diego State women’s soccer team used a dominating second half to defeat UC Irvine, 3-2 last weekend  at the SDSU Sports Deck, moving  to an 8-1-1 record for the season.

September 19, 2012 (El Cajon) -- The City of El Cajon Recreation Department, together with Crest Kiwanis, present the annual ALL FORE R.E.C. Golf Tournament.  The tournament will be held at the Sycuan Resort, 5485 Casino Way, El Cajon, on October 5.  All proceeds from the tournament directly support activities that develop youth and provide positive choices through youth activity scholarships, youth sports, recreation classes and after-school programs.

PADRES CELEBRATE JERRY COLEMAN DAY SEPTEMBER 15

 

September 11, 2012 (San Diego) – Scripps Health presents Jerry Coleman Day on September 15 at 5:00 p.m.  The Padres will be celebrating the legendary baseball and broadcasting career of Jerry Coleman with a statue unveiling at 5:00 p.m followed by the game against the Rockies at 5:35 p.m.

YOUTH BASKETBALL CAMP OFFERED AT GROSSMONT COLLEGE, AUGUST 6-9

 
July 31, 2012 (El Cajon) -- The Grossmont College Athletics Dept. and Grossmont College men’s basketball coach Doug Weber are inviting all boys and girls entering the 3rd through 9th grades to Grossmont College’s annual youth summer basketball camp, from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, Aug. 6-9.

The camp will feature instruction on fundamental skills, group and individual contests and three-on-three tournaments, along with life lessons about sportsmanship, communication and goal setting. Cost is $75 per camper, which includes t-shirt, contest prizes and giveaways.

July 14, 2012 (Escondido)  – The Escondido Police Officer’s Association has announced that their annual “Cops for Kids” golf tournament will be rededicated as the Cadet Luis Romero Memorial Golf Tournament, to be hosted at the Vineyard at Escondido Golf Course on Monday, July 16 at 1 p.m. The event celebrates Luis “Frank” Romero, an aspiring law enforcement officer who succumbed to a Glioblastoma Multiforme brain tumor earlier this year at the age of 18.

Two-time Olympian race walker a mentor to next generation of athletes
 
July 6, 2012 (El Cajon) -- Cuyamaca College cross-country coach Tim Seaman, a two-time Olympian race walker, will be traveling to the Games in London, but this time it will be as a coach instead of as a competitor.

Athletes competing in the  men’s 20,000-meter race walk at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Oregon last week included, from left, Tyler Sorensen;  Cuyamaca College graduate Nick Christie; Cuyamaca College cross country coach Tim Seaman, and the winner of the 12-man race and the lone qualifier for the London Games, Trevor Barron.  Seaman, who has competed twice in the Olympics, is the coach for these three young athletes.

But for Jimmie and younger brother Jarit racing began in the deserts of Southern California and Baja Mexico racing off-road. Nearly every weekend was spent either driving off road race cars or working around the sport in some way.

June 17, 2012 (Lemon Grove)—It was a sweet victory for Lemon Grove Firefighters Saturday night, when driver Joe Lavigne climbed out of his smashed-up vehicle to claim his department’s trophy.  Lemon Grove entered two cars in the Firefighters’ Demolition Derby at the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar—and both made it into the final round.

3RD ANNUAL LAKESIDE RELAY FOR LIFE 2012 JUNE 9-10

May 18, 2012 (Lakeside) – The 3rd annual Lakeside Relay for Life will be held June 9-10. This is a 24 hour, free family fun event open to the public to raise funds and awareness for The American Cancer Society while having a great time together.

Teams of people camp out and take turns walking or running around the track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event, which represents the reality that cancer never sleeps and neither do we. By participating, you honor cancer survivors, pay tribute to the lives we've lost to the disease, and raise money to help fight cancer in your community.

May 13, 2012 (San Diego) --Laura Bennett claimed the third and final spot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team with a third-place finish Friday at the inaugural ITU World Triathlon San Diego. Bennett (Boulder, Colo.) will head to her second straight Olympic Games in August thanks to a time of 2 hours, 11 seconds on the 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike, 10-kilometer run course throughout Mission Beach. She was fourth in Beijing in 2008.

STEPHEN WATSON OF EL CAJON WINS NCAA PACWEST DIV II MEN’S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

May 7, 2012 (El Cajon) – Stephen Watson, a Christian High Grad, won the NCAA PacWest Div II Men’s Golf championship April 24.  He was honored with PacWest Co-Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and is a member of the All-Conference First Team.

Watson captured the individual title by recording a five-under-par 211.  On the final day of the tournament he carded his second 69 of the tournament, finishing (69-73-69) after entering the day in a four-way tie for second place. Watson wins the tournament in the Lancers' first season as a member of the conference. He was one of just two players to shoot under par in the final round.

16TH ANNUAL HAWAIIANAIRES POLICE GOLF TOURNAMENT MAY 11

May 5, 2012 (El Cajon) – The 16th Annual Hawaiianaires Golf Tournament is May 11 at the Cottonwood Rancho San Diego Golf Course, 3121 Willow Glen Road, El Cajon.  The event benefits the El Cajon Police Officers’ Memorial Fund is sponsored by the El Cajon Police Officers Association.

The entry fee is $120 per person and limited to the first 144 people.  Registration will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a 12:00 p.m. shotgun start.  Dinner will follow the tournament.  Tickets may be purchased by calling 619-442-9891.

COMMUNITY MOURNS LOSS OF NFL CHARGERS STAR JUNIOR SEAU

Flowers, banner at Junior Seau Sports Complex in La Mesa pay tribute to football legend

May 2, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) –East County and San Diego leaders reacted with shock and sadness to news that former Chargers star Junior Seau, 43, was found dead at his Oceanside home today of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.  

A former resident of Mt. Helix and supporter of local charities, Seau also frequently visited the Junior Seau Sports Complex at La Mesita Park in La Mesa that was named in his honor.

“He was always here for us,” La Mesa Art Madrid said, La Mesa Today reported.  “He was part of the family in this town.”
