EAST COUNTY INTER GENERATIONAL GAMES -- BRIDGE THE GENERATION GAP

 
 
 
September 19, 2011 (La Mesa) -- The La Mesa Adult Enrichment Center will be holding the East County Intergenerational Games in La Mesa on October 13. Youths from ages 6 to 12 are teamed up with active older adults for games. Activities are non-competitive, fun and simple! The circuit includes street hockey shot, bocce roll, Frisbee toss, soccer kick, “skeeball” pitch, basketball, trivia games, snacks, lunch and much more! Teams are a combination of students and adults having fun.

After a 2010 season that saw the team finish one game out of the playoffs, this year's team struggles in last place with a 51-64 record, 12 games back from the NL West leading San Francisco Giants.

RANCHO SAN DIEGO LITTLE LEAGUE TEAM WINS SECTION 7 CHAMPIONSHIP, VIES FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TITLE

July 26, 2011 (Rancho San Diego)-- Rancho San Diego Little League players on “The Dawgs” clinched the Section 7 Championship last week. The boys, ages 9-10, are now vying to win Southern Califiornia’s Subdivision 3 in order to face off against Northern California teams in the state championships.

 

The Dawgs triumphed over Twin Hills to win the Section 7 title by a 17-3 score. Since then, they've gone on to win two of their first three Subdivision 3 play-off games, moving closer toward a chance to vie for the state title.

The freshman earned the right to represent the United States after winning the event at the 2011 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships last month in Eugene, Ore.

 June 16, 2011 (La Mesa)Chris Ahrens is a school teacher and an elite athlete. For months on end he has trained long hours in preparation for this month’s world championships in his sport. 

 

His team departed on June 13th for the 2011 CPISRA Football 7-a-side World Championships in the Netherlands (that’s soccer, to you and me). Ahrens is a defender for the U.S. team.

NAVAJO STARLINGS TAKE THE GOLD

June 12, 2011 (San Diego's East County) -- Navajo Starlings U12 took 1st place in the Gold Division at the Starlings San Diego County Championships for volleyball held at Alliant University. The team is comprised of 5th & 6th graders attending 10 different elementary and middle schools throughout the greater Navajo area.

 

The division had 14 teams, and the hard work put in by the girls over the course of the season paid off when the team took first in its pool to move into the gold division. They then won three matches to capture the title, including a very tough and competitive three game semi-final match against Santee. They led the entire way in taking a two game match against East Lake in the final.

June 8, 2011 (San Diego) - Max Homick pitched a complete game shutout while teammate Becker Sankey had three hits and three RBI to lead the Rancho Bernardo High School Broncos to a 6-0 win over Grossmont High School at SDSU's Tony Gwynn Stadium on Saturday (June 4). The win gave the Broncos their second consecutive CIF-San Diego Section Division I baseball championship title.

June 6, 2011 (San Diego) - Jake Reed held off a last-inning rally, pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts and only one walk as the Helix Highlanders defeated the Steele Canyon Cougars 7-3 to capture the CIF-San Diego Section Division II baseball title Saturday (June 4) at SDSU's Tony Gwynn Stadium. Reed also helped his cause by hitting a triple and a double, scoring a run and batting another run in.

Robbie Nesovic and Joe Musgrove each hit three-run homers to put the Foothillers ahead and in control.

9TH ANNUAL DREW FORD/KIWANIS CLUB OF LA MESA SOAP BOX DERBY MAY 21

 

 

May 13, 2011 (La Mesa) -- Thirty-six youngsters ages 8 to 17  will race on Saturday, May 21, as they compete in the 9th Annual Drew Ford/Kiwanis Club of La Mesa Soap Box Derby.

The race cars, which are built from kits, achieve 24 mph as the roll down Junior High Drive adjacent to Highwood Park and La Mesa Middle School.

The double-elimination races get underway about 9 am and continue until about 3 pm with trophy presentations.  Winners of the two divisions — stock and superstock — in this derby are sent by the club to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the National All-American Soap Box Derby in July.

JOHNSON GETS PUSH FROM EARNHARDT TO WIN AARON'S 499

 

April 18, 2011 (San Diego's East County) -Teamwork is often a forgotten concept in a sport like stock car racing, where individual accomplishment gains the most attention. Jimmie Johnson didn't forget the concept at the Aaron's 499 race at Talladega Speedway Sunday, April 17. His Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Dale Earnhardt Jr., gave him a push at the finish, giving Johnson his first win of the season and 54th of his career.

Proceeds will benefit wounded Army, Navy, and Marine Corps personnel at Naval Medical Center in San Diego. Armed Services YMCA, a 501c3 nonprofit, is the host sponsor.

Three of the ten indicted included two former players and a former assistant coach from the University of San Diego basketball program.

April 6, 2011 (San Diego)-- The 45th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis squad had its eight-match winning streak halted on Wednesday as it fell to cross-town foe and No. 24 San Diego, 6-1, at Hogan Tennis Center on the campus of USD. With the defeat, the Aztecs fall to 12-7 on the season, while the Toreros improve to 15-4.

The afternoon started off rocky as SDSU lost the doubles point after finding itself on the wrong end of all three matches.
