BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: GROSSMONT NOT SATISFIED WITH 47-36 WIN AT STEELE CANYON

by Christopher Mohr

February 7, 2010 (Rancho San Diego) - Whoever coined the phrase, 'a win is a win', never met the Grossmont Foothillers' basketball team. If you knew nothing about the outcome of Friday night's game and observed the Grossmont players' demeanor afterwards, you would have been surprised to find out that they won. Although it's a game they would rather not talk about, the Foothillers survived their lackluster play and a late run by the host Steele Canyon Cougars to pull out a 47-36 win.

BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: EAGLES SOAR OVER HIGHLANDERS, 64-55

by Christopher Mohr

February 2, 2010 (La Mesa) - Last Friday's basketball game at Helix High School between the host Highlanders and the visiting Eagles of Granite Hills High School had its share of scoring runs by both teams. The only problem for Helix was that Granite Hills' scoring runs were longer in duration as the Eagles prevailed with a 64-55 win.

WESTERN STATES HOCKEY LEAGUE: GULLS SHUT OUT CONDORS WITH 4-0 WIN

by Christopher Mohr

(ESCONDIDO) - Saturday night's hockey game at Iceoplex Escondido between the host San Diego Gulls and visiting Bakersfield Junior Condors was almost the exact opposite of Friday night's game between these two teams, a 13-3 rout by the Gulls. Such scores make fans who missed the game do double takes and wonder if there will be a hockey puck shortage--or if the final tally came from a football game instead.

This time the goals were not as easy to come by as it was the defense that shined for San Diego. They survived several flurries of shots from Bakersfield and overcame a double-minor penalty en route to a 4-0 win.

GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: LADY SULTANS COME UP SHORT IN UPSET BID AGAINST VISITING EAGLES

by Christopher Mohr

January 24, 2010 (Santee) - You cannot fault Santana High School's Lady Sultans basketball team for a lack of effort in last Tuesday night's game against the visiting Granite Hills Eagles. They overcame a huge deficit and came close to pulling off what would have been a monumental upset. In the end, effort wasn't enough to defeat a highly talented Granite Hills team as the Eagles squelched any hope of an upset late in the game, escaping with a 53-41 win.

BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: PATRIOTS DOWN POINTERS, 64-53

by Christopher Mohr

(SAN DIEGO) - When you see the Christian High School Patriots' boys basketball team at its best, you see a team that runs like a well-oiled machine. In the opening minutes of their January 15th game at Point Loma High School, that's exactly how they looked against the host Pointers.

GAME OF THE WEEK – POINTERS HUNT DOWN COUGARS, FACE CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC AT STADIUM ON FRIDAY

by Christopher Mohr

(SAN DIEGO) December 4 – The early trend of tonight’s game between the Steele Canyon Cougars and Point Loma Pointers suggested that a shootout was in the making. For much of the game, it seemed as if both teams would continue to trade touchdowns and the old adage that the last team having the ball would win this game might come true.

Ultimately Point Loma’s running game took control and Steele Canyon was unable to respond, allowing the Pointers to go ahead late in the game and hold on for a 30-26 win.

GAME OF THE WEEK: HIGHLANDERS UPSET NORSEMEN, ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS

by Christopher Mohr

(RANCHO SAN DIEGO) November 27 - That's why they play the game. Such a statement is typical after a game like Friday night's playoff matchup between the visiting Highlanders of Helix High School and the host Norsemen of Valhalla High School.

As fans and self-proclaimed experts, we often play the game on paper, giving out predictions and speculation without regard to the fact that the game is played on a field. Most of the time we get away with it, but this wasn't one of those times.

 by Christopher Mohr

(LA MESA) November 13th - Success can be simple, even in the game of football. For all the complexity the game provides with its playbooks, schemes and systems, sometimes all a team may really need to win is keep giving the ball to one of its best players.

GAME OF THE WEEK: NORSEMEN WIN LEAGUE TITLE FOR FIRST TIME IN SCHOOL HISTORY WITH 14-7 WIN AT STEELE CANYON

 by Christopher Mohr

(RANCHO SAN DIEGO) November 6th - High school football coaches often remind their players that the game is 48 minutes long and to achieve success, you must play hard for all 48 of those minutes. Friday night's football game at Steele Canyon High School between the host Cougars and the visiting Norsemen of Valhalla High School was a great example of why this reminder is so true.
