January 11, 2017 (San Diego) - San Diego State cornerback Ron Smith (Oakland, Calif./St. Mary’s HS) was recently named to a pair of 2016-17 bowl teams. A redshirt freshman, Smith was named to the Associated Press All-Bowl Team and the Athlon Sports All-Bowl Team.

January 9, 2017 (San Diego) - Former San Diego State great Marshall Faulk has been named to the 2017 College Football Hall of Fame Class, the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced Monday morning. Faulk will be the third Aztec in the College Football Hall of Fame, joining Fred Dwyer (inducted in 1997) and head coach Don Coryell (1999).

December 29, 2016 (San Diego) - The San Diego Chargers announced their team awards on Thursday and cornerback Casey Hayward led the way, earning team MVP and Defensive Player of the Year honors. Also honored were Melvin Gordon (Offensive Player of the Year), Darrell Stuckey (Special Teams Player of the Year), Matt Slauson and Joey Bosa (co-Linemen of the Year) and Brandon Mebane (Most Inspirational Player).

December 28, 2016 (San Diego) - San Diego State women’s basketball produced one of its best defensive efforts of the season against Biola, holding the Eagles to a season-low 48 points in a 63-48 non-conference win Wednesday evening.

December 28, 2016 (San Diego) - San Diego State men’s soccer player Pablo Pelaez added to his growing list of postseason accolades recently after collecting second-team all-freshman honors from College Soccer News. In addition, the Aztec midfielder was featured on Top Drawer Soccer’s Men’s Division I Freshman Top 100 postseason list, earning a No. 15 ranking.

December 27, 2016 (San Diego) - University of Minnesota football players showed up to play in this year’s National Funding Holiday Bowl.  However, 10 of them did not.  Ten Golden Gopher football players were suspended for an alleged sexual assault that happened in September.  The team boycotted practice on December 15 and a petition that reach over 1,200 signatures was filed against Golden Gophers head coach Tracy Claeys, calling for his firing after how he handled the boycott and the situation with his players.

Alas, the Gophers showed up to play against the Cougars on Tuesday and San Diego had another bowl game on their hands.

December 19, 2016 (San Diego) - The rival Oakland Raiders came to Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday and like every time the Chargers and Raiders square off, it was a good one.

Despite the Chargers being eliminated from playoff contention with the Dolphins’ win on Saturday night, they still went out and competed.

December 15, 2016 (San Diego) - San Diego State Women’s Water Polo released its 2017 schedule on Thursday, which will commence with the annual alumni game on Saturday, Jan. 21, at Aztec Aquaplex.

The Aztecs immediately take to the road to compete at the ASU Tournament in Tempe, Arizona, where they will face-off against both Arizona State and Wagner on Jan. 28. The team will then make its way to Los Angeles for a game against the defending NCAA champions, USC, on Feb. 3.

December 14, 2016 (Spring Valley) - Mount Miguel High School varsity boys soccer is off to a hot start in their 2016-17 campaign, their only loss being on Saturday against the Crawford High School Colts.  Tonight, the Matadors faced another San Diego Unified school, the Lincoln High School Hornets.

December 13, 2016 (San Diego) - For the third straight season at the team’s annual banquet, San Diego State senior running back Donnel Pumphrey was honored with the John Simcox Memorial Trophy as the 2016 team’s Most Valuable Player and the Byron H. Chase Memorial Trophy as the offensive player-of-the-year, becoming the only player in program history to accomplish the feat.
